Stay-At-Home Serial Killers

Article: The type of serial killers that are rare and not fully understood are the killers that kill close to home and dump bodies in or near their home. Recently, a man has been charged with killing ten people and burying them inside his home and in his backyard. His killing spree went unnoticed because his house was shielded by surrounding buildings and the stench of the decaying bodies was thought to come from the meat plant nearby. His victims were people of his neighborhood and he never traveled or left town that is why he is an example of a subcategory of serial killers called stay-at-home serial killers.

Relation:
Chapter 14 discusses abnormal behavior and psychological disorders in which the actions of this serial killer suggest a level of mental illness or sickness. No normal person scatters dead bodies in their home nor kills innocent people. The type of disorder I would relate this man's actions to is antisocial personality disorder because people with this disorder can be classified as sociopaths. Sociopaths have no regard or guilt for the consequences of their behavior and regularly break the law, most cases are murder.

Missing Signs and Symptoms of Acute HIV

Article: A 34 year old woman has been suffering acute HIV infection like symptoms for two weeks but tested negative for the virus and other sexually transmitted diseases. The symptoms of acute HIV are fever, pharyngitis, sweats, lethargy, and rash. Yet, she informed her doctor that she has a new sexual partner she has been with for a month. They have never used condoms. Her results might be negative but her doctor is convinced that she does have acute HIV infection. Due to the fact that HIV screening misses those most recently infected. Acute HIV infection is the period immediately following HIV contraction when the body has not set an antibody response for tests to detect the virus.

Advance for Nurse Practitioners 2009

Relation: In chapter 10, HIV is discussed to be the sexually transmitted disease that everyone knows about. I chose this article because, even though everyone knows of HIV, people are not taking the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. Living with HIV is severely stressful and can increase a person's vulnerability to psychological disorders, such as depression and anxiety disorders.

PTSD: Cause and a Cure

ARTICLE: This article discusses the seriousness of posttraumatic stress soldiers have after major events occur while in a war. Soldiers that return from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan have the psychological scars of war and their worst days in combat. The remains of dead soldiers that were killed have are sorted by fellow soldiers to identify and inform relatives. Any little incident such as seeing fellow soldiers die can cause posttraumatic stress disorder, a disorder resulting from exposure to a major stressor. A veteran who denied he had PTSD, once woke up from a nightmare with his fingers around his wife's throat until she turned blue. Other than the normal treatment of drugs and therapy, soldiers report that a social connection with family and friends and talking about their traumatic experiences with PTSD tends to help them revert to their old lifestyle faster.Time Magazine 2009

Relation: PTSD is discussed in chapter 11 and states that it can start out as acute stress disorder, but can progress to PTSD if the symptoms last more than a month.
PTSD can cause nightmares, possibly hurting others while reliving a day in combat, and anxiety that could last for years. In extreme cases, PTSD can lead to suicide or murder. In chapter 15, the common treatment for psychological disorders, such as PTSD, can be treated by psychotherapy, therapy with a professional psychologist to understand their problems. Antidepressant drugs are also taken while having therapy to assist in the treatment of PTSD.

Sexual Satisfaction

Article: A survey was taken to show how today's economy has shaped couple's love life compared to last year. In 2008, the results reported that couples were having sex three or more times a week. Today, the results show that couples are having sex less or not at all. Both frequency of sex and quality of sex has decreased. Women reported that the start of the recession has made them helpless and depressed to the point they worry about finances while having sex.

Shape Magazine 2009

Relation: This article relates to chapter 10 in the section discussing sexual dysfunctions and problems. The less sex the couples were having due to stress is an example of a sexual dysfunction called stress-induced dysfunction, which effects sexual desires. Sexual dysfunction is a problem with the actual physical workings of the sex act stated in chapter 10. The psychological stressor of the economic downturn is the reason for the lack of sexual interest and arousal.

Makeovers For Breast Cancer Survivors

Article:
Women with breast cancer have a hard time building self-esteem after beginning chemotherapy. This article explains how women usually want to go back to their normal appearance. Chemotherapy causes drastic changes to a woman's appearance such as hair loss, skin discoloration, and dry skin. To gain their self-esteem, women get assistance by participating in the Look Good, Feel Better program that offers beauty tips from hair and makeup professionals. Women in the program have stated that once they regained their beauty routine their spirits improved.

Spartanburg Herald Journal 2009

Relation: I chose this article because it relates to chapter 9 which discusses motivation and emotion. The women must maintain their appearance to increase their self-esteem. In this chapter, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs can be applied to this situation because the women must satisfy the basic need, which is a physical need of beauty. The desire of becoming beautiful again to gain self-actualization, the result of achieving personality fulfillment, has to be met so the women who survived breast cancer can be happy again.
